To close this out, I worked with parazyd for a while on IRC this morning and this noon and his assessment is that the hardware drivers are loaded and things should be working. Well, it's not so back to the Olimex Debian image from which I've already excised systemd and chopped it down to a lean 253 packages, though I will add a few Python packages to support the weather station processing software.
I have a A20-OLinuXino-MICRO running Debian Jessie with a linux kernel 4.8.17 I compiled myself. I needed support for a USB wifi nic not supported by the kernel delivered with Olimex image.
I compiled more modules (~2500) than delivered with the Olimex image (~1500). btrfs module is available. Actually I took the config file from the linux-image-4.8.0-2-armmp-unsigned_4.8.15-1_armhf.deb package, then tweaked it based on the info found on Olimex and linux-sunxi wiki.
The system runs stable on SD card, with a slightly overclocked RAM frequency (408MHz instead of 384MHz), no fan, no heatsink. However I did not test SATA, neither any Olimex accessories.
If you are interested by the compiled kernel (and suitable u-boot), I can provide it. Or I can give you the recipe for compiling all this yourself, if you prefer.
