AFAIR Dennis Ritchie lamented the spread of the capitalized form UNIX, he insisted it was never meant to be that way and that at AT&T/Bell Labs they always wrote Unix. But, alas! all capital lettering was ubiquitous back then, at least in several systems/terminals, and the custom stuck. IIRC only this year the US Navy gave up the requirement that its communications must always be trasmitted using all capitals.
