experiences vary widely, as do needs. e.g. on the ns==a==mx issue. i know *many* simple sites where there is one server. they see no reason to create multiple fake names, or worse fake interfaces, for all the services; it just makes more cruft, clutter to maintain, etc. on the other hand, larger sites have multiple servers, backup mx, separate nameservers, ... the technical protocols are the bounds of the box. within those bounds lies the design space. and there are all sorts of needs and tradeoffs in that space. e.g. it took liman and crew at least a year to settle on the ripe document describing ripe-192 <http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-192.html>, dns setup for the minimal site. this stuff is not simple or easy. and there is no one right way. and prof wirth taught us that both the previous sentences should be false <sigh>. randy
