Dear DNSOP WG, I would like to request WG adoption of the following Internet-Draft: A Framework for DNS Resolution Latency Measurement https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-jwang-dnsop-dns-latency-measurement/ This draft proposes a conceptual framework for describing DNS resolution latency measurements. DNS latency is widely used by recursive resolvers, authoritative DNS operators, network operators, measurement platforms, and researchers. However, latency measurements are often obtained using different measurement scopes, observation points, methodologies, and operational contexts. As a result, measurements reported as “DNS latency” may represent different aspects of the DNS resolution process and can be difficult to interpret or compare consistently. The draft addresses this issue by providing a common semantic framework for DNS latency measurements. In particular, it introduces: a common terminology for DNS resolution latency measurements; a conceptual latency decomposition model; explicit definitions of measurement scope, measurement point, and measurement context; three conceptual timing components covering clientCrecursive communication, recursive resolver processing, and recursiveCauthoritative interaction; and a reusable measurement description template intended to improve the interoperability and comparability of measurement reports. The draft is intentionally implementation-agnostic and protocol-neutral. It does not define new DNS protocol behavior, modify DNS message formats, or prescribe a specific measurement algorithm. Instead, it aims to provide a common basis for describing and interpreting existing DNS latency measurements. I believe this topic is relevant to DNSOP because DNS latency measurement is already an important part of operational practice, while there is currently no common conceptual framework for describing the scope and context of such measurements. I would appreciate feedback from the WG, in particular on: Whether the problem addressed by the draft is appropriate for DNSOP; Whether the proposed measurement framework and terminology are useful to the WG; and Whether the WG would support adoption of this draft as a starting point for further discussion and development. Thanks for your review and feedback.
Best regards, Jishuang Wang
