This proposal is technically very precise, which I appreciate, but I
find the semantics puzzling.  What does it mean for a domain name to
carry a "protected wetland area" record?  What does it mean for a
domain name to indicate a "supply voltage"?

This is all stuff in DIEM.

Sorry, all that came out perhaps a little more strident than I intended... DIEM is finally at a stage at which we've gotten past the most violent disagreements, but I'm still a little raw from that. :-)

If you can look past any poor-diplomacy, I think I got the factual bits across, and if not, let me know, I'm happy to go through them in more detail. The gist of what I was trying to get across is that I think the IETF's role is to standardize communications methods, not judge communications content as worthy or unworthy. Since there will always be people with opinions about that, but the world is an objectively better place if people are able to interoperate because of standards.

And the IETF is not the only body that makes standards. And people right now are communicating standardized variable structured data using _brands in wood_ but want to be able to communicate the same information digitally, over Internet protocols. No, I'm not kidding.

This is the problem DIEM is solving. The DNS is just part of the Internet protocol stack that carries messages.
