February 2007
Dear friends of Philippine Liberalism,
Election fever starts to spread in the body politic, and it is fascinating to
track the different permutations and combinations! In any democracy, election
time is both a time when people debate where they want to go as a nation, and
when they expect to be entertained by their leaders. All that creates a unique
national experience nations are never more themselves than at election times.
Work, meanwhile, goes on. At the regional level, we had an excellent workshop
on political party management with CALD (Council of Asian Liberals and
Democrats) in Jakarta. The will to improve and professionalize and thereby rise
to the expectations of the citizens was clearly noticeable among the
participating parties.
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation has been supporting the spread of new usages
for information and communication technologies as tools for citizens
involvement and political debate. As part of this, we organized a blogging
workshop for Newsbreak magazine to further stimulate the use of this instrument.
Participating in an international seminar is a special experience, especially
for young people. To follow up on this, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation
supports regular gatherings of the alumni of its international seminars. At a
recent event at our office, we launched the annual alumni directory to allow
people to stay in touch, and the Alumni Group reconstituted itself around a
common program and leadership.
Lastly, a look forward: for the first time in this region, we offered an online
seminar on globalization. We received a huge response to our invitation. The
application period has just ended, and participants from Thailand, Indonesia
and Malaysia will soon join Filipinos online. Stay tuned!

Liberalism Needs Organization: CALD Holds Workshop on Political Party
Management
One of Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD)s important objectives is
to strengthen its member parties by offering training. One field where this is
of particular relevance is in the management and organization of political
parties. Political parties are vital actors in any representative democracy,
and the quality of parties affects the quality of democracy. In the young
democracies of Asia, however, political parties are often relatively young too.
They suffer both from internal weaknesses and a lack of support in improving
their capabilities since many professionals shy away from politics. CALD
therefore decided to fill the gap and offer its member parties a chance to
learn together from their individual experiences. Together with the Friedrich
Naumann Foundation, it sponsored a party management and development workshop in
Jakarta, Indonesia from February 4-9, 2007. More:
