Purged plugins again, and this time worked for me. I tried entering in my login twice; the first time rejected them; the second time accepted them and the Twitter plugin finally worked. Now gnome keyring has the account data as well.
I guess this is going to be an invalid bug now. But if you're still curious, on both versions of the Twittter plugin, the username/password fields would remain populated with data, and I could click "Validate" with that data. It would either result in (1) rejection of the valid credentials (this happened for a while before the above-listed behavior even happened), or (2) acceptance of the credentials but the above- listed behavior. Like I said, it works for me now, but maybe this will have put you on to something that can help you, or that other users might be having problems with.
