If you quit gnome-do and then restart it, then there is a better chance of of the session mgmt. commands working. But I too experience the same as Charles, the longer my system is running the less chance of the session mgmt. commands have of working.
I've also tried starting gnome-do via the terminal to see if there are any obvious messages being displayed, but I'm afraid there's nothing to give any clues to the root cause.
