The Center for Global Security Studies Online Debate Forum:

Should the U.S. ratify the Convention on The Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)? National Advocates and
Public Participants Will Debate the Merits of CEDAW

WHAT: Public policy analysts, advocates and public participants will
present arguments for and against the ratification of the Convention
on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW). In light of the U.N. Beijing Plus Five Forum in June,
advocates are mobilized on both sides for future action on CEDAW.
The Clinton Administration and other grassroots organizations have
maintained their commitment to CEDAW and the Platform For Action
(PFA) which fights for gender equality through international
mechanisms and norms. However, the Senate Foreign Relations Chair,
Jesse Helms and advocacy groups continue to block action and even
debate on CEDAW on the Senate floor. In light of inaction at the
federal level, it is important to continue the public debate on
CEDAW.

WHERE / WHEN: The CGSS is sponsoring a Public Online Debate on CEDAW.
This internationally recognized forum will take place at
www.cgss.org from June 27 through the month of July.

HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED: The CGSS has created a preliminary
reference list for articles on CEDAW. These articles are all
available through our website. Your organization may already have an
article linked to the CGSS Online Debate. You can actively be
involved by suggesting additional resources, viewing public reaction
to your articles and posting responses to participants. We are
anticipating hundreds of participants with links to hundreds of other
organizations and thousands more observing the debate. WHO: National
leaders will come together to discuss what the U.S. should do about
CEDAW, in the midst of federal gridlock. Expected participants
include: Linda Tarr-Whelan, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.
Commission on the Status of Women and the President of the Center for
Policy Alternatives (CPA) Christopher McIntosh, Senior Policy
Analyst at the Center for Global Security Studies (CGSS)
Advocates from Concerned Women for America (CWA) Advocates
from the American Family Association (AFA) Advocates from the
Lutheran Office for Governmental Affairs (LOGA) Advocates
from the National Organization for Women (NOW) Advocates from
the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA) The Center for Global
Security Studies Strategic Brief will be released in June and will be
available at www.cgss.org. CGSS is one of America's leading
nonpartisan public policy and debate centers working across the
globe.
