This is a part-time (3 days/week), salaried position with benefits. Start date is December 12, 2002. The position will be located in Washington, DC. Position Description The Deliberative Democracy Consortium is seeking an energetic professional with leadership experience and an interest in the fields of democracy building, public policy, and dialogue. The successful candidate will work in a highly autonomous environment to develop and implement new strategic initiatives, build partnerships and promote the nascent field of deliberative democracy. In general, the Staff Director will lead the ConsortiumÕs effort to build momentum within the movement and within government. The Staff Director must be comfortable working with professionals from a range of backgrounds-academics and practitioners, funders and government officials-in the areas of citizen engagement, public involvement, dialogue, and electronic democracy. The Staff Director will report to the Chair of the Committee and support the work of Consortium Steering Committee. The Staff Director will be responsible for working with the Chair of the Steering Committee to manage the development of the Deliberative Democracy Consortium, including strategic planning, external communications, fundraising, and program development. Existing initiatives of the Consortium include: * Creation of a network-of-networks among communities of practice, including fields such as Conflict Resolution, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Intergroup Dialogue and Civic Engagement. * Define and identify ways to strengthen the key elements of a national, nation-wide infrastructure for deliberation * Knowledge building activities that connect fields of research and practice In addition to 3-5 years relevant professional experience, the successful candidate will possess the following: * Excellent written and visual communication * Superior public speaking abilities * Program development and project management skills * Excellent organization and information management * Working knowledge of MS Office, database management, and desk- top publishing * Knowledge of Macromedia Dreamweaver or comparable WYSIWYG editor and email/internet applications * Strong knowledge of organizations and leaders in U.S. and international democratic reform Consortium Profile The Deliberative Democracy Consortium is a new initiative, funded for two years under a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The purpose of the Consortium is to further the growth and success of the nascent movement to bring about a more deliberative American democracy through the development of relevant theory, research, and promotion of innovative practices of deliberative democracy at the national level and nation-wide. The work of the Consortium includes research, design and experimentation; dissemination of results; collaboration within the field; fundraising; and increasing the credibility and visibility of the deliberative democracy movement in the U.S. and around the world. The Deliberative Democracy Consortium is overseen by a 16-member Steering Committee composed of practitioners and researchers working in the United States and around the world to promote deliberative citizen participation in democratic decision-making.
