I agree - but that could be because I have designed websites professionally. Also bear in mind that I am looking at the site with IE6, which isn't rendering the same as others.
Well, do you folks agree that having a contrasting bg helps to make the content stand out? Light bg is not constrasting. and makes the boxes ugly.
:: 2) body font :: the font size is too small
You have got to be kidding!!! The font is HUGE (http://wypug.digital-word.com/miscellaneous/mod_perl_website.jpg).
well you folks figure out which size is the best, this is too contradictory, but see below.
:: for ease, i suggest we use :: :: font-size: 11px.
I wonder if the pixel measurement is what's breaking on IE. I always use "pt" for fonts and these render perfectly in IE (rather than "px"). I also know that "pt" renders equally well in NS (and probably others). So, can we change all font-sizes to "pt" and get the cross-browser match we're all striving for?
Well, I beg your pardon, but both fixed size fonts approaches are simply wrong. What if I'm almost blind and I need to have huge fonts? What if I want to squeeze as much text as I can in one page, and want to use the smallest readable fonts? If you go with fixed fonts you go against user. IMHO, using relative sizes: +1, -1, +3, etc. is the right way to go. No cross-platform headaches and heated discussions about picking 'pt' ve 'px'. While I'm not a designer, I've happened to design a few sites which forced me to read a lot on design issues, and that's one of the first things that you learn. You don't "sell" your product for win95 user with IE4, you "sell" it to tens of platforms, with hudreds of browsers which half of them are broken (not following standards)

I can't think of a more appropriate place to advertise these.
Absolutely. These ads are not eye-candy, they are there for three reasons:
- help users to make their decision to buy the book
- help advertise mod_perl through these books
- help the authors to get a little back for the great work they have done. Unless you author the llama or camel book, you aren't going to be rich from writing a book.
I presume these are linked through Amazon's Partner Programme (or similar)? If not, why not? Use these to generate a little revenue stream for the authors, or to contribute towards hosting costs, etc.
That's what I've in the current guide, but after talking to the authors I've simply linked to their sites which provide the links to the associated programs.

I have also taken the liberty of asking a designer friend to put together a few alternatives as potential candidates for a new logo. I gave her a little background, a few relevant URL's and drew attention to the possible use of a feather, camel and/or an eagle. I also told her to feel free to try out new ideas. So we'll see what she comes up with.
cool!
I guess we could run another contest on the modperl list, but if you want to do that please someone take the lead of this task :)

huh, this png won't load in mozilla.
Along these lines, perhaps we could also come up with a tag line (like MySQL's "Speed, Power and Precision" - http://www.mysql.com/)?
yet another idea for a wider forum contest ;)
