Hi Susan and Alan,

it's good and important that you (Susan) mention the relationship
between Solaris and OpenSolaris. In these discussion lists, we
ususally talk about both at the same time, and many aren't aware of
that.

I think it's correct to say that almost all documentation about
OpenSolaris is "inherited" from Sun, and that the community is just
starting to find its role in the documentation area.

While it's okay to request more documentation or pointers to it,
I'd like to see contributions, too. I'm happy that so much
documentation has been made available by Sun. It could me much
worse. Consider what you get when you by a PC, and with it the
software that was installed on it.

In the FOSS area, some stuff is documented very well, e.g. PostgreSQL
has excellent manuals, but for other products, hardly anything is
available. I would hope that all of OpenSolaris including SFW will
be documented as well as the best-documented Sun software, and it's
our job to do that. (And to make available what already exists.)
Now that SMF, ZFS, and DTrace are open, everyone of us can go ahead
and help make the docs perfect. And the community will appreciate it.

Rainer
