Evince is the name of the GNOME PDF viewer application - are you reading
the PDF versions of the reference manuals from docs.sun.com?
There is a known font rendering bug in builds 94-96 that is being fixed in
97. Some people have successfully worked around it by changing settings
in the GNOME Appearance panel under font preferences (choosing Best Shapes
vs. Best Contrast, etc.)
