Each SVC has an identifier, and the identifier determines what featureset is running over that service ID. Some service IDs are handled directly by the vBSC. Other service IDs are forwarded to ALOM for handling. To further complicate matters, there are three or more different protocols used, as each service ID was free to implement its own protocol.
