            Bug ID: 70076
Summary: Compiling and Installing: Download section
                    misleading/outdated (INSTALL.bindist)
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.5-HEAD
          Hardware: All
               URL: https://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/en/install.html#do
                    wnload
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Documentation
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

The Download section of the Compiling and Installing page starts with:
> The Apache HTTP Server can be downloaded from the Apache HTTP Server download
> site, which lists several mirrors. Most users of Apache on unix-like systems
> will be better off downloading and compiling a source version. The build
> process (described below) is easy, and it allows you to customize your server
> to suit your needs. In addition, binary releases are often not up to date
> with the latest source releases. If you do download a binary, follow the
> instructions in the INSTALL.bindist file inside the distribution.
The advice in the second sentence seems most questionable, until one realizes
it refers to the first sentence, and that the first sentence refers to vanilla
packages. In other words, it is recommending compiling from vanilla source over
using official binary packages, which are frequently outdated… so outdated, in
fact, that the last one was released more than a decade ago, and all have been
archived since. In fact, official binary packages should *not* be used at this
point.

I recommend to simply drop that paragraph, and moving the link to the download
page to “downloading” in “After downloading”.
