Hi :) There ARE various places to buy LibreOffice from. Also the license allows people to modify and re-sell as long as they make the original version easily available.
Typically this is used to gain wider distribution. Sometimes getting LibreOffice into stores cost a flat fee or requires a certain percentage and the less the store makes the less likely they are to push LibreOffice in favour of some other product. Think about Apple's App Store, Android's store, Chrome store, Ubuntu's store or whatever other name they choose for the same thing in the future we might have to think about how to get OEMs more interested in LIbreOffice than something else they can profit from. There are also boxed-sets, such as native language German, Brazilian, Greek, US English and others which are mostly there for people who don't have decent internet access. Typically they 'bundle' various other OpenSource programs - except that in bundling you are forced to accept the others whereas these projects allow you to pick&choose which to install and which to ignore. Likewise with documentation. The Lulu bookstore sells printed versions of the published guides. Various other places sell the guides for a tiny amount. Also there are people who sell "technical support" and such and then provide the programs for free. Redhat has worked that way for years and they contribute a lot of dev time and more to the LibreOffice project and many others. Some of the things, such as the US English boxed set run at a loss with the costs barely covering postage let alone running costs for printers, packaging, "use of home as office" and all the rest. Almost all the profits from any of these things goes into making sure newer versions of LibreOffice and the documentation get into the same places. A small amount goes to the re-seller. The rest is either directly given to LibreOffice or to the regional group or is available for community use upon request (and does get used by the community). Just as a disclaimer i have always hoped to be able to get the charity i work for to sell LibreOffice installation Cds for maybe a £5-£10 to generate a little income for them and for TDF. So far though i have just been installing and helping people for free.
