Actually, it's counter-clockwise (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey). But regardless...that is a painful way of doing it. Pull lower rad hose. That'll drain it, and fast! :-P

Turn it counter clockwise. Most, especially those with some miles on them, can be quite stobborn to open up. But it's a heck of a lot cleaner than trying to pop a full lower radiator hose.
