The transmission shop ought to be able to substantiate their
diagnosis. These transmissions are electronically controlled, and
have on-board diagnostics. Did they tell you why they thought it
needed a rebuild? Did they mention stuff like clutch volume indexes,
trouble codes, or the like?

If not, you need to either go back to them and find out how they
diagnosed it, or find a different shop.

A fluid/filter change might do wonders; it also might be $50 wasted.
For $1500, it's probably worth a shot.  I wouldn't put ATF+4 into it;
ATF+3 is more than adequate and far less expensive. If the trans
fluid has never been changed, your chances that that will fix the
problem are much better than they are if it has been changed regularly
with the right stuff.
