That's called a "bump stop", and it used to be fairly common place
with early A604 4-speed transmissions.  It's a hard shift into first
gear, just like you said.  The trans in these cars typically doesn't
do this, but I suppose it's possible that it could be within the range
of 'normal' if it's not severe.  You might want to inspect the
condition of the fluid in the transmission, and have it and the filter
changed if it doesn't look perfect.
