There is no reason for 20w 50 in any modern day engine if its not having any
kind of problem. Thicker oil can reduce oil consumption due to worn parts and
assist in keeping up oil pressure due to worn bearings and stuff, but otherwise
if you have a tight engine, I highly not recommend it. You should get WORSE
gas mileage with thicker oil. There is no doubt that it is harder to pump and
some engines flow different than others so results will vary.

I'd use 10w 30 in the summer and 5w 30 in the winter. In stuff like southern
Texas where its hot all the time you should be able to get away with 20w 50 oil
but its like pumping honey in northern Wisconsin or Canada.

If gas mileage dropped right after getting the oil changed, you might want to
fart around with the idea that they might have adjusted tire pressure while you
were in there. Many times the kids working at these oil change shops don't
know how to read a tire pressure guage and don't realize that sometimes the oil
old oil filter seal stays on the engine instead of the filter and you get two
O-rings up there that will undoubtedly leak later on. Just something to think
about.
