I've seen sending units fail without failing completely (intermittent, like one 'dead spot' with it, where it would be fine with the level being anywhere else in the tank).
I've even had one of my own vehicles have it fail (completely dead) for about a week, then start working again. Vehicle sold at somewhere north of 275k miles and problem never returned. Since you already verified electrical, odds are quite good that's your problem.
