Hey Bob, You want a 00+ LH tranny. They were beefed up in 00 and should be stronger. Granted the other school of thought is if you made it 166K on your 94 tranny then you could get a93-97 and not have to make any adjustments, just bolt it right in and if you treat it the same that might get you over the 300K mark. Not many are hanging onto their LH's longer than that. But let's assume you want to go the beefier route, then you want the 00-04 LH slushbox.
There are some mods you have to do. You have to "move"(drill) one of the bell house bolt holes over a few inches. You have to move one of the flex plat bolt holes(use the newer torque converter) over a tad. You'll have do a few wiring changes to the tranny, and then some will mess around with the rear gears. I forget the ratios off the top of my head, but the trannies off of the 2.7 and 300M specials have a higher gear ratio. The upside is better acceleration, downside is decreased fuel economy and you'll have to recalibrate your speedo(if you want to remain accurate). As for dropping it it looks a lot worse than it really is. have you ever dropped a RWD tranny? I thought the the Trep would be tougher, but it was really similar. The major difference being that you have half shafts to worry about and that it's really heavy and short. So if you're using hydraulic jacks to raise and lower it like I did then it's a little bit more sketchy dealing with a heavy short object. Finding the center of gravity lining the engine and tranny up to bolt it back in. Nothing too difficult, just the normal tranny BS you have to go through. Me and a few others have done some serious brain dumps about the 1G->2G tranny swap over on DI.net if you're interested. There's lot's of pictures, how-tos, and warnings already out there. It's a really fun job to tackle with a friend, you'll have a great sense of accomplishment when you pull her out of the garage for the first time. :) Couple of warnings that come to mind are the top bolts to the tranny are a mother funchie to get to. The two top bolts bolt the tranny to the engine but then chrysler also bolts a support bracket for the heater hose or a coolant line or something but it's a metal line and it's bolted right to the back of those two tranny bolts. They are tricky to get out. I basically unbolted the tranny mount so that the engine and tranny were only supported by the engine mounts and my hydraulic jack in the back. I raised the tranny up a bit to get the heater hose bolts off(what a PITA) and then I lowered the tranny way down and got the two top tranny bolts from under the car with a swivel and a REALLY long extension. :) But I'm doing this from memory so read my write up to be sure cause I wrote that right after doing it when everything was fresh in my mind.
