Noisy struts can often be heard when "bouncing" on the top of the car
like you do to check the rebound on shock absorbers.  If you get the
car moving up and down pretty good and you don't hear it, it's
probably not the struts.

I dunno about the caliper explanation.  Is the braking performance normal?
