Your cruise control buttons place resistor values across wires which are
monitored by the PCM to tell what button you have pressed. When the
resistance values change, strange things seem to happen as the computer
tried to do what it thought you told it to do.

The wires go into your steering column, and to the steering wheel by way of
a clock spring cable, and indeed it is usually the culprit, as others have
said.

Think of it as a half way wound springy plastic with printed circuit traces
on it. That maintains the contact as you turn the wheel. One way tightens
it a bit, the other way loosens it a bit. Also involved are the horn &
airbag contacts.

Do you have any horn issues? Is the airbag light on?

Sometimes relief can be had by just plugging the critter in again, thereby
wiping the contacts. The job is not hard for you to do yourself. If the
fault is in the clockspring itself, you must replace it for the fix.

Get the factory manual, and pay attention to the disarm procedure. Be sure
to put the airbag screws back into the holes where you removed them, since
those fasteners have special properties.

Autozone rents wheel pullers for free, if you don't have one.

Hello, I am beggining to go insane over this matter. The cruise
control doesn't work on my Intrepid. Well, I should say that it works
when it wants to, that is, I turn it on, and it either works or not. I
am wondering what could be the problem? I have changed the fuse to
make sure that wasn't the problem but it still does the same.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
