The 3.8 used to be one of GM's finest engines, right up there with the SBC.
Unfortunately, as time has gone on, the quality has declined a bit. The
Series III engines my neighbor across the street has both have had
significant failures -- one lost a seal in the intake and hydrolocked,
another developed a rod knock. Both of these happened around 80K miles, and
neither could be attributed to the driver or lack of routine maintenance.
He himself was a GM interior engineer up until the purges this past year,
and lamented that the older, Series II engines and others of 80s vintage
were far more bullet proof.

The other problem I have with the GM 3.8 is the relatively low specific
output per liter. 200HP is NOT a lot of power from an engine of that
displacement. Although the Chrysler 3.8 only puts out marginally more
horsepower, it also enjoys a really great reputation for reliability.

As far as the LeSabre's concerned, the roofline on those does allow a fairly
straight up and down fitment for the windshield. I'm sure it comes at the
cost of aerodynamics, and I wouldn't look for it to continue to be that way
in future Buicks. That is, if there are very many future Buicks -- the
entire brand sold only half as many units as the Impala by itself for the
first nine months of the year.
