Seat-of-my-pants guess is that it was the torque converter.

The car had long exhibited a torque converter shudder when upshifting at
high RPM at high speeds -- if you punched it until it hit 80 or so and then
let off abruptly you could feel the whole driveline shudder.

The whine varied with engine speed and was quite loud when it happened.
Outside of the engine and accessories, the only thing that was turning fast
enough was probably the torque converter.  But it's just a guess.  I didn't
really want to have to find out!  :-)
