As long as the gas smell is only at startup, I would not worry about it 
provided the car runs fine and still gets good gas mileage.  The 
air/fuel mixture on startup is normally quite rich, and you are 
smelling unburned gas.

But, it'd help to know what kind of car we're talking about.
