You're right, these are great looking cars. I would love to have one. But the 2.7 isn't weak in the power sense. 200 HP, same as all the others. But there was a design flaw in the early years of 1998 and 1999, depending on who you talk to. Correct me if I'm wrong, Guys, but I understand it all stemmed from simply not providing a large enough oil reservoir, which caused lubrication deficiencies. Frequent oil changes seemed to resolve the problem (4000 miles or less), but many people didn't do that. Nor were they careful about low oil levels.
I like to recommend ALLPAR.com for good reading and all the news from Chrysler. Under the ENGINES tab at the top of the home page we read: "The 2.7 liter engine had a tendency to generate sludge which caused engine failure. Similar problems have been appearing on Toyota and Volkswagen engines. We were told that, shortly after the first reported cases, Chrysler isolated the problem to the crankcase ventilation system; hydrocarbons were entering the oil and breaking down the additives. This problem has been solved (around 2002-2004), and the number of engine failures appears to be small." Really nice looking car and loaded. I saw it had a "2.7 Magnum" tag on it. Does anyone know- is this the same 2.7 in the Intrepids that everyone has had so many complaints about? If so, I wonder why in the world they would put such a weak motor in a R/T product. I couldn't find much online so I figured I'd check with you guys. Thanks.
