Hi Laurie,
There is absolutely no risk or safety reduction in 
going to a straight mineral oil; you will still have plenty of engine 
protection.  The main values of synthetics are their ability to 
handle higher temperatures for longer periods without 
breaking down, and they keep combustion by products in suspension better for 
longer periods, but given that we control oil temp closely and change engine 
oil 
much more frequently than in automotive applications these attributes of 
synthetics are of little value to our engines.  You will also save a 
lot of money!!!
