Hello Ian,

Oil supply to the overhead gear in Limbachs has always been pretty minimal
in my view as it relies on feed thru the pushrods.

Tappet clearances opening up could be due to wear on the end of the valve
stem or rocker tip, but most likely is due to rocker bushing / shaft wear,
possibly exacerbated in your case by the low oil temp (and consequently low
flow to the overhead gear). Lift off the rocker shafts & check for worn
bushes (and shaft). Blow out the oil gallery in each rocker before
reassembling & use plenty of oil when reassembling.

Regards

JGV

For about past 400 hours I have checked tappet gap with.0.2mm and never
adjusted gaps but yesterday I tried 0.25mm feeler gauge and noticed it would
just fit in many of the gaps. Naturally I readjusted them all back to 0.2mm

My question is in past I have always noticed gap closing up especially
exhaust but never seen all gaps opening up. The local VW man George always
says clacky tappets are happy tappets. Has anybody out there got an idea
what is happening? This engine runs very cool and oil only just gets to
75degC (the min). It has reached the stage I am now fully blocking off air
to cooler to get temp up and am using 10W40! I even bought new oil temp
gauge and probe and still the same very low temp, while pressure is always
close to 4atm. It never needs a top up in 50hrs.
Any thoughts out there.

The only failure in 500hr was a tappet cover cork had a crack and put in new
plugs at 500 has for something to do (Limbach 3 probe plug).

Limbach are great engines & I reckon the TBO should be upped to 1600hrs like
L2400 or whynot 1200hrs like L1700 at a minimum. Come on Limbach do your
paperwork.
