I don't know, we bought it with the plane. OEM I suppose. I think all Dimonas in Germany or Europe had to have their tanks changed to metal for some technical reason. In Germany there is something called a "TMA", which is either a recommended or mandatory technical change to the airplane. TMAs are usually released by the manufacturer to fix some problems that have occured in operation, and I believe the Dimona tank has been the subject of such a TMA.

Hi Ian,

we have the metal tank, and it holds 83 liters. We just had it out to replace rudder cables. I didn't put it on a scale, but just from handling it,  it seems very light. Anything fibreglass will probably be heavier.

Cheers

Hi All,

Of interest the NZ CAA have put out an AD for those glass Dimona fuel tanks of which ours has one.  THe AD says that it is to be replaced with a metal one at 3000 hrs or if on an inspection there are bits of molten resin floating around in the bottom.

A company in Auckland who I have been associated with for many years, manufacture fibreglass parts for an NZ aircraft manufacturer. They also build other bits ... ie a fibreglass fuel tanks for the P40’s rebuilt in NZ ... amongst other things. Their quality has to be seen to be believed.

Anway, getting  to the point ....   I am thinking about the idea of using the original fibre tank I have to create a mould to make “new” tanks using  new modern resin which will not be affected by the additives in Mogas.   Also it can have the earthing screen (aluminium net) moulded in.

Would there be any interest in this as an alternative to alloy ?? I would need to organise an approval from NZ. If there are a few required, it could be economically viable.  I am happy to organise the logistics necessary.

What has got me thinking about this is that the old resin tanks hold just over 80L while the aluminium ones seem to be a bit less ... 65 or 70.  I’m not 100 % sure but I think that is the case.

For about past 400 hours I have checked tappet gap with.0.2mm and never adjusted gaps but yesterday I tried 0.25mm feeler gauge and noticed it would just fit in many of the gaps. Naturally I readjusted them all back to 0.2mm

My question is in past I have always noticed gap closing up especially exhaust but never seen all gaps opening up.  The local VW man George always says clacky tappets are happy tappets. Has anybody out there got an idea what is happening?   This engine runs very cool and oil only just gets to 75degC (the min). It has reached the stage I am now fully blocking off air to cooler to get temp up and am using 10W40!  I even bought new oil temp gauge and probe and still the same very low temp, while pressure is always close to 4atm. It never needs a top up in 50hrs.
Any thoughts out there.

The only failure in 500hr was a tappet cover cork had a crack and put in new plugs at 500 has for something to do (Limbach 3 probe plug).

Limbach are great engines & I reckon the TBO should be upped to 1600hrs like L2400 or whynot 1200hrs like L1700 at a minimum. Come on Limbach do your paperwork.
