Hi All. I had a couple of bouncer mails on this topic including yours Royce. I put them through to the list but please remember you must use your prescribed email address when sending to the list to avoid this. I have not yet removed John’s addy from the system but will do so shortly so please be aware his family may be reading these mails not that that is a problem really. Below is a mail I sent regarding John. He will be sadly missed. Yes Royce I realise how deep your friendship was with him being your original instructor. I share your admiration for the man in all the same ways. A great talent lost to us and our sport. Nige.

I was stunned. John rang me a couple of days before I left for Tassie on holidays. A long call as is usual for us. I made the comment he wouldn’t know himself after the knee replacement. Sadly that is the case but not as I meant it. I am quite shaken. At least we had spoken so recently. This week we would have been in planning mode for the next engine course. He was a mate and a Mentor and of crucial help for me in the development of the Engine courses and the creation of the Engine Training Manual BSE Engines and Systems. When I took on the role of RTOA for SA and NT there was no handover and I was was put in boots and all into a state that had had basically had no audits checks and balances foro decades. John was my coach through that period and was always available to guide me in the roll. I spoke at length with Samantha Sunday evening which was helpful to us both. John developed an arrhythmia in the left Ventricle after the op. They were trying to get it sorted but eventually he had an arrest shortly before the family were to arrive for a visit. They attempted but sadly failed to get him back. Before the op John had a stress ECG and Echo ECG/Ultrasound and passed with flying colours in preparation for the op. Obviously there was a problem that was not detected hence the family have requested an autopsy. As Tanya mentioned Sarah got the super bug of super bugs when she had her hip replacement. Thankfully in OZ we have the PBS as the costs of the Super Duper Antibiotics ran into $100K’s and yes I mean multiple. As John observed through the ensuing year after the op he nearly lost her several times. this was quite stressful for the family but John plodded on while caring for Sarah. John was the best of Loving Fathers and Husbands. You can imagine the dismay of the family at 2 disaster visits to the same hospital. While John was an employee of the GFA for 5 years in which time he did a great job and worked more hours than he was paid for, he should be remembered for having been in several roles in Ops and AW as a volunteer and even after the board did the dirty on him (my opinion) and sent the AW department into the abyss he still gave me and others help when needed and especially he stepped in to help out as requested by the AW department. While he wanted nothing to do with board members after that it didn’t reflect in his continued support for AW and Ops. John did not suffer fools lightly but if someone recognised their weakness’s and asked for help he would deliver it in such a way as to not be condescending to the individual. Thus he was a good teacher. Like Asho, JV deserves a decent write up in G.A. I hope the GFA provides some recognition for the funeral. Something in the death notices maybe. John was a great servant to our sport and I will miss the old bugger immensely. Sam advised me last evening that unless there is an unforseen issue the Coroner and the funeral director expect the 16th is suitable. 2 PM at Tobin Brothers Funeral Directors 5 Synnot St Werribee. Solemnly Regards. Nige.
