Have you ever seen anything decent electrical made by Ducatti. I haven't ever. Those things overcharge the battery causing premature battery failure. The permanent magnet alternator with ducatti regulator can not get rid of the extra, energy correctly.
There are 2 different principal regulators for these alternators and ones like powermate made by Claus Gimm (now not made) immediately look after battery and life increases to 6 years. Most motorbikes use this charging system and many forums on charging http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,20426.0.html http://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650a-2012-2016/346786- series-regulator-upgrade-sh775-sh847-2.html Kabuta use there alternators with what looks like ducatti regulator. I could quote several 912 owners who have to buy a new regulator from Bert Flood imports say 2 years apart until after the third $200 regulator they have seen the light. LEAF (leading edge air foils) a rotax parts dealer in USA has a aftermarket form of regulator Ask how can a regulator that small get rid of electrical energy. One way to improve life of batteries is turn landing lights on after say 30 minutes of flying and you become the regulator. I have used Claus Gimm regulators for well over 20 years but now must research a replacement. This http://roadstercycle.com/ may be one. Rotax pick the cheapest rubbish they can then they can keep selling you a new regulator every few years. The original 2 stroke "thing" at top of engine was not much more than a bridge rectifier. In 2 stroke case the good regulator is mounted at base of boom so AC comes down the boom.
