Thanks Dave,With the second highest rate of deaths in the world from
mesothelioma after the UK and goodness knows how many cases of asbestosis, I
guess Aussies are more aware of the dangers than others.
Very important that all are aware of the dangers so DOG members elsewhere
should be interested.
Up till the 80s it was everywhere here. Roofing and wall linings, home and
factory insulation, pipe lagging, etc and asbestos mining and related
industries.
There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to scoring the disease other
than exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. The symptoms occur decades later.
Sometimes exposure was quite limited. With others, major long term exposure.
Wives falling Ill after washing their husbands' asbestos contaminated work
clothes over the years. Adults who as children played in asbestos contaminated
mine tailings.
There are still very many older homes with corrugated fibro (asbestos sheeting)
boundary fencing around them and eith roofing. This is safe unless there is
damage to the fence or roofing and broken edges and fibres are exposed and
released. Its just a matter of painting the exposed edges to seal them.
When handling anything you might even suspect could contain asbestos, its wise
to mask up, glove up and cover up before going so. Its a terrible disease as
Dave has alluded to and you would not wish it on your worst enemy.

I did get Rob’s original message yesterday. Thanks for reposting. And yes,
asbestos is a killer. Rob will remember my friend Tony Biddle who has
mesothelioma from fitting a fibre wall to his farm’s bathroom. And my mate
Lincoln Hall died from building a cubby house with his dad.

Best wishes,
David
