That's not the way the default is set up.  In the mail config, there is
a line that reads `Receive your own posts to the list?' which is set to
`yes' by default.  The line below, `Receive acknowledgement mail when
you send mail to the list?' defaults to `no'.  I assume that mailman is
working as advertised and it is GMail that is dropping the list version.
