Interesting point. From the RRC info., it states that:
"If an internet user attempts to go to an expired domain they will see a
404 error."

So for now at least, it looks like they won't be using this for
advertising. But, I can see that if the auction service takes off this
could be changed. So, this begs the question of what Tucows has planned
with this.

Unfortunately, one scenario for domain owners is that their domain will
expire, they will notice their web site is now 404 and they can't
connect to their email server, they check the DNS and it is something
they don't recognize. They then think their domain has been hijacked
and start to both panic and blame us. This is worse than the current
situation where they just think their web/email isn't working and
contact us and we explain that their domain is expired.

As mentioned in another reply, we need to understand what this means for
search engine spiders and indexing. My guess is that the current
situation of an NXDOMAIN is better than a 404 or robots.txt with a
Disallow: / My assumption is that the search engines expect DNS errors
and temporarily expired domains and keep retrying until they are
reasonably sure the error is permanent and until they are, the
indexing/ranking for the domain isn't changed. However, once they get a
404 or robots.txt with Disallow, that is updated quickly and would have
negative effects.
