Hello ,
Reading the incoming messages on musical influences is very
refreshing.
The names of the mentioned songwriters and musicians bring back many
memories from the past.
But what about the future ?
I often use the website cdnow.com to listen to free 30
second free examples from several songs on every cd in print. This
website, originally saving me from many poor choice purchases based upon
enthusiastically hearing just one song on the radio, actually now is my
primary source for new influences. Any given music may have been
recorded just last month.....or even seventy years ago !
Especially helpful is the Album Advisor mouse click providing a
list of similar recordings by other artists in the same style, revealing
more potential influences.
Also, for drummers, bassists, and guitarists truly interested
in the Doobies' style, try the "James Brown Rhythm Sections" book and
cd. This package provides
written music and recordings of the drums, bass, and guitar of several
James Brown songs. The interweaving of the instruments is very similar
to the Doobies style.
Listening to the Doobs I hear and feel a lot of James Brown.
Right now I'm working on a groovin' instrumental by Grant Green,
"Ain't It Funky Now", originally attributed to James Brown. Check it
out on cdnow !
