I have a radio interview from 1980 entitled Profiles In Rock--The Doobie
Brother. Patrick mentioned that in addition to suffering from peptic ulcers
Tom wanted to do music in his own style and that he didn't feel the band was
interpreting his tunes the way he had envisioned. Pat also said Tom was not
happy with the final mixes of The Captain And Me and his dissatisfaction
went on into Vices. Pat mentions that he, too, was not happy with TCAM and
the band was dumbfounded when that album became the giant it turned out to
be. (I've often wondered what Pat and Tom think of those records in
retrospect)
It sounds like a combination of circumstances led to TJ's temporary
departure. I'm glad he's back, though.

The Doobs put out a video back around the cycles tour which was
kind of a "Behind the Music" documentary about the band and
the reunion of the original band lineup .
I have the video but the name escapes me right now . I think it was
called "Listen to the Music" or Cycles .Someone can correct me.
but anyway...
In the video Tommy stated he had a little problem with drugs
and life on the road wearing him out and Bruce Cohn basically
told him to go home and get well and the Doobs hired Mike
McDonald to finish the tour and the rest as we know is history
as Mike stayed with the band for a number of years and went
on to win grammy's for the band and was a big part of their
late 70's and early 80's success .
I'm sure the VH1 BTM this week will shed more light on the
different member changes and history.
Should be very interesting .
