Some Border Patrol info, but first this:
KC, sounds like you're thinking about the Tom Johnston band. (Border Patrol
was a separate entiry that came later.) The "kid on guitar" you refer to is
Greg Douglass. Hard to think of Greg as a kid -- by the time he joined the
TJB, he'd been a member of Hot Tuna, Steve Miller Band (co-wrote Jungle
Love), Van Morrison Band, and numerous local Bay Area bands inlcuding some
featuring Nicky Hopkins and John Cipollina from Quicksilver Messenger Service
(Raven, Terry and the Pirates). Yes, Greg Played with Mistress. And yes, that
was Brett Bloomfield on the second tour.
OK -- Border Patrol. This band included TJ, John Hartman, David Hayes on
bass (Van Morrison band, Jesse Colin Young band), Greg Douglass (guitar), and
Charlie Williams (vocals... perhaps guitar, too? ) (Charlie Williams was from
a band called Carrie Nation that was well known in the Bay Area in the mid
1970s, but originally from the deep south.) Charlie Williams and TJ shared
lead vocals. I'm not sure if any of their material appeared on the Cycles
album, but they did perform a prototype version of "Showdown", which of
course appeared on the Brotherhood album. I don't know the exact dates of
their existence -- somewhere in the mid 1980s. Also, their lineup could
easily have changed -- someone on this list mentioned Hartman was out at some
point?
After Border Patrol, TJ played many local Bay Area dates as part of a band
called the Tom Johnston/Greg Douglass band. This went on for about a year.
They did many Bay Area gigs Additionally, Greg Douglass did a thing called
the "Greg Douglass rock n roll revue" where he'd have different people
performing with him on different nights. TJ was often a part of this.
A side note, a short-lived band called "Little Joe" existed at this time,
too. It featured Greg Douglass, Charlie Williams, Bobby Vega (future Zero
bassist) and Greg Elmore on Drums (ex Quicksilver). They did a TJ/Greg
Douglass tune called "Blind Love" that was hot. "Blind Love" was also done by
Border Patrol. I wish the Doobies would do this song.
At the Fan Club meeting two years ago TJ mentioned he and Greg Douglass still
keep in touch -- and that he considered Greg a fantastic guitar player, which
he is. Greg maintains an excellent website, where you can read his whole

Now here's another question -- Has anyone heard of "Skin Suit"? This was a
short-lived Bay Area band featuring Pat Simmons. This band existed sometime
after the official Doobies' breakup. I understand it was an informal affair.
I've never heard them or heard much about them. Anyone know?

PS -- KC, I was at the Bodega and Keystone Palo Alto shows, too. Remember the
band "Glide" opening for TJ in Palo Alto, w/Tiran playing guitar with them!?!
And then Tiran sitting in with the TJ Band for the encore of China Grove and
Long Train Runnin'....

Tower of Power at the now defunct Circle Star Theatre. Bringing back some
old, but fun memories now . . .
