Hi folks. I'm Slowburnin' Steve, age 46. I grew up in Morristown, Tennessee, about 35 miles from Knoxville. I discovered the Doobie Brothers about late 1971, early 1972, right after I got my first 8-track tape player for the ol' 1967 Chevy Impala, my first car. I remember having to defend the Doobs from my crazy Youth Minister at church who thought they were surely demon possessed, and my buddies, John and Larry, who preferred Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, thinking the Doobs were too mild. I graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Social Welfare Degree, married my college sweetheart, worked 8 years a district exec with the Boy Scouts of America, during which time I was promoted to come work in Roanoke. In 1981 the college sweetheart decided that the grass was greener on the other side, and I came home one day to find packing boxes everywhere. Just as well, the woman was deranged anyway. She didn't like the Doobs. I remarried in 1984 to Saint Cindy of Roanoke, who has the patience of Job to have put up with me over the past 16 years. During our time together she has blessed my with two beautiful children, Eric-age 10, and Sally-age 6. Eric plays the piano, and Sally can sing LTTM with the best of them. I worked as Director of Volunteer Services at our local Area Agency on Aging from 1984 to 1989, and have been a Social Worker with the City of Roanoke Department of Social Services, specializing in Child Day Care, from 1989 to the present. In 1998 I discovered the Doobie Fan Club, and struck up a friendship with Laurin Willis, who I thought was female, and so I was very polite and gentlemanly until I found out we had similar equipment. Now he's my buddy and sometimes traveling companion. In 1999 we were talking and I mentioned that I owned every album the Doobs had produced, but had never seen them in concert because of time, money, or distance. Big Daddy Doob informed me of an upcoming concert in Charlotte, NC, so I positioned myself on the Ticketmaster website with hands as fast as a gunfighter when the tickets went on sale. It was there that my dreams of a lifetime came true. I saw the greatest U.S. band, and after the show I went backstage to meet my idols. I saw the Doobs again in 2000 in York, PA, where the infamous butt squeeze of Keith Knudsen took place in honor of my friend, Glenn Maloy. Also, in 2000 I was slowed down considerably by emergency back surgery which I had been putting off, and now have permanent nerve damage due to procrastination. Unfortunately, not much dancing is possible for me anymore....sorry Gina. Other than the Doobs I enjoy music by YES, ASIA, Jethro Tull, and Grand Funk Railroad. My kids have adopted Mark Farner of Grand Funk as "Uncle Mark", and they attack him with hugs whenever possible. I enjoy the shooting sports, gun shows, thump around on my Fender Jazz Bass guitar, and try to find the wind power for my Yamaha flute. I have had the privilege of meeting with Torrey, Gayle, Miles, Laura, Susie, Laurin, Dale, Linda, Anne, Helen, Steve A., Deborah, Gary, and talked to many, many more of you, none of which I would have ever found without this wonderful club, and for that, I am forever grateful. And yes, I have been known to be long winded.
