Talk about good timing -- Moby Grape, the band that the Doobies modeled
themselves after in their formation years, will play San Diego on Saturday,
June 16th. This is a rare gig, indeed. The last time Moby Grape played
together was over two years ago.

The Doobies' and Moby Grape's paths have crossed many times:

John Hartman specifically moved to the West coast to try to reform Moby Grape.
Skip Spence introduced John Hartman to Tom Johnston.
Skip Spence gets a thank you on the back of the Doobies' first album.
Peter Lewis was asked to join "Pud" (pre-Doobies). He declined -- this
created the opportunity for Pud to ask another player -- Pat Simmons.
Skunk Baxter was asked to join the Doobies so they could complete their "Moby
Grape vision" of three guitarists (Moby Grape had three, too)
Cornelius Bumpas played with Moby Grape in 1977 and 1978.
Tiran Porter played bass with Moby Grape in the early 1990s.
Tiran Porter played bass with the Jerry Miller Band in the early 1990s.
(Played on Jerry Miller's solo CD, too.)
John McFee produced and played on Peter Lewis' solo album
Tiran Porter plays bass with Peter Lewis' band
James Preston plays drums with the current version of Moby Grape (James
Preston is the drummer for the Sons of Champlin -- this band includes Bill
Champlin, who co-wrote a couple tunes with TJ on the Sibling Rivalry album)
Dale Ockerman played on Jerry Miller's solo CD.
And the list goes on.....................

The show is a SF Summer Of Love throwback. Also on the bill is Jefferson
Starship, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Jefferson Starship includes Marty Balin and Paul Kanter. I've heard excellent
reivews of this formation of the band. Big Brother is excellent -- I saw this
formation a couple years ago in Portland, OR. Sam Andrew, Peter Albim and
David Getz (guitar bass drums respectively from the original band, plus a
real guitar wizz from the bay area, and I'm not sure who the lead singer is.
Strawberry Alarm Clock -- don't know a thing about them.

Anyway. For those who don't know, San Diego is about 2 hours south of LA.
It's a beautiful town. Way more laid back than LA. Right next to Mexico.
Great beaches. Great vibe. And the show's being held in Balboa Park. What a
beautiful setting.

Here's the phone number for for tickets and information: 619-696-1931

Maybe I'll see you there.
