No. Do not edit that file!
Arduino's download is meant to be a complete, stand-alone package,
except for having a Java JRE on your machine. It coes with RXTX, the
AVR toolchain and other stuff, all built in.
Hundreds of thousands of people use this software. The lions share are
on Windows and Mac, but lately Linux is a pretty big chunk. This
software really does work, without editing its startup script. Many
thousands of people use it successfully, without doing the stuff you're
trying to do.
Get rid of the RXTX and other stuff Ubuntu provided. They're ancient
and incompatible. You don't need that stuff.
You're just causing yourself a world of grief by trying to do things not
the way they were meant to be done. If you're editing the Arduino
source before you've even run it successfully, I don't think anyone can
really help you remotely by email.
