I think you are thinking of "dot matrix" style printers which used rows and
columns of pins to impact the ribbon and print on the page. I've never
seen one that actually used a typeset head (like a typewriter) for printing.
Anyway, I'd call freegeek, I'm sure they would give you one. Not sure how
powerful the heads are though and if they can punch into Mylar.

Subject: [dorkbotpdx-blabber] use your ASCII line printer?

Hi all,

I am working on some fancy typewriter-embossed mylar book covers, for copies
of my most recent book "I, SLUTBOT". I hope to finish this in the next week
or so, to sell during the Nondenominational Gift Season.

I've worked with this medium before, and I really like the results. For
instance, these business cards:

But for the sake of mass production I am starting to wish I had access to
one of those old all-mechanical ASCII line printers, the kind we had in the
computer lab when I was in college. Enormous, heavy, loud, fast,
mechanical, they had a moving chain of typewriter keys that were struck by
individual solenoids when they reached the appropriate point on the page.

With such a printer, I could create an elaborate artwork in VI and stamp it
onto mylar sheets, instead of having to hand-stamp every character on every
cover with my Smith-Corona typewriter.

Does anybody on this list know where I could find a line printer that still
works?
I would probably want to experiment with output a bit, and then run a final
production of 20 or so sheets of mylar through it.

Thanks in advance,
-mykle-
