I haven't been following these threads ompletely, but every single thing that has come up on this list over the past couple of days re: Mac OS X, petsc/slepc etc. has already been seen. Things were the way they were because of what is working easily at the time. (As in no hypre on Mac OS X, staying with petsc 3.0.x, not moving to CMake yet etc.) Now, many things have been changed, and a lot of things are broken. I don't know where this sudden rush to make all these changes is coming from.
