Does lame give any diagnostics when k3b calls it?

Can you still rip that CD to ogg?  What about a different CD that you
may have recently ripped successfully?  IOW, try something to ensure
it's a problem with this particular CD plus MP3 and not a new problem
with either the drive or this particular CD.  Any chance it's accessing
the wrong optical drive?

It's been ages since I've done it, but I used to use

    cdparanoia --batch --abort-on-skip

to rip .wav from /dev/cdrom.  The -d option can specify another drive.
It would at least show there's no issue with the CD or drive.  You could
append a `3' to rip just track 3 to save time.
