I'm getting:

PID TTY          TIME CMD
   7293 tty3    00:00:00 bash
   7708 tty3    00:00:00 ps

Of course, I can only do that in the VC, because I I can't get a terminal 
emulator when I'm still in the desktop.

I'm not sure I understand this; are you suggesting that bash might be locked?  
I thought you could run as many instances of bash as you wanted?

Where is this?  I can't run Konsole, so if it's in there I can't get at it.
