I got a Mint live CD from one of those Linux mags a couple of months ago so I might give it a try. In fact, I've been collecting live CDs/DVDs for a couple of months so I've got about 5 or 6 of them to try out but I can't try them out on my current old desktop because the CD and DVD drives are both broken unfortunately. Still waiting on my new computer but should get it on Tuesday :-)
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and keep them coming please. At the moment, my plan is to try a few distros I have live CD/DVDs for, including Ubuntu of course, and see which one I prefer. I am mostly concentrating on Debian-based distros but will try out a couple of others as well. I expect I might simply end up with Ubuntu due to familiarity with it but it's always fun to try a few live CDs :-) -- Next meeting: Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-11-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
