Getting Samba out of the way, can you get this to work, having
re-instated /apps/gksu/sudo-mode to be true.

    $ gksu id
    uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
    $ 

If so, then the remaining problem is Samba related, something I know
nothing about.  :-)
