In the end I did manually configure smb.conf and that has got samba working 
for him.  He doesn't want me to trash his installation for the moment, because 
he is still seeding a number of bittorrents.  If I can fix it before he 
finishes seeding; fine.  Otherwise his installation is for the chop.
