- for audio files you want to keep for future unknown use or you want to
keep as an archive, use flac (best compromise for quality as it is lossless
and size as it is compressed).
- for listening on your Linux computer, ogg.
- for listening on a non-Linux computer or MP3 player, wav then convert to
MP3 using Audacity and Lame.
- for listening on a smartphone, check the specs of your smartphone (see
Dan's comment on Android).
- for editing audio (in Ardour, Audacity, Cubase etc), wav.
